My great-grandmother, Ethel, came from England to the United States in 1921. She brought almost nothing with her---just a few clothes and trinkets(小装饰品). But she did bring some customs from “ the old country” that she had learned as she grew up.

One custom was that if you dropped a glass or a cup and it broke, you would throw a pinch of salt over your left shoulder. It was funny that she did that---she wasn’t superstitious( 迷信的) in other ways. I think that she grew up doing that, so she continued to do it as a connection to her childhood and a reminder of what it was like living in England.

Ethel also taught us a New Year’s Day custom that our family continues to follow today. To celebrate the new year, we would travel to a friend’s house for a quick visit. My great-grandmother always took a pound of butter with her on our visits. We would enter the friend’s house through the back door. The butter we brought was to give our hosts a “gift of gold” to symbolize hope for prosperity in the new year.

After my great-grandmother died, we still visited people on the first day of January, but eventually we stopped bringing the butter. We never did throw salt over our shoulders after breaking a glass or a cup. Some customs are continued when they cross from one country to another, but some customs fade away.

If your boss asks you to work in Moscow this year, he’d better offer you more money to do so — or even double that depending on where you live now. That’s because Moscow has just been found to be the world’s most expensive city for the second year in a row by Mercer Human Resources Consulting.

Using the cost of living in New York as a base, Mercer determined Moscow is 34.4 percent more expensive including the cost of housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment (娱乐).

A two-bedroom flat in Moscow now costs $4,000 a month; a CD $24.83, and an international newspaper $6.30, according to Mercer. By comparison, a fast food meal with a hamburger (汉堡包) is a steal at $4.80.

London takes the No. 2 place, up from No. 5 a year ago, thanks to higher cost of housing and a stronger British pound relative to the dollar. Mercer estimates (估算) London is 26 percent more expensive than New York these days. Following London closely are Seoul and Tokyo, both of which are 22 percent more expensive than New York, while No. 5 Hong Kong is 19 percent more costly.

Among North American cities, New York and Los Angeles are the most expensive and are the only two listed in the top 50 of the world’s most expensive cities. But both have fallen since last year’s study — New York came in 15th, down from 10th place, while Los Angeles fell to 42nd from 29th place a year ago. San Francisco came in a distant third at No. 54, down 20 places from a year earlier.

Toronto, meanwhile, is Canada’s most expensive city but fell 35 places to take 82nd place worldwide. In Australia, Sydney is the priciest place to live in and No. 21 worldwide.www.ryedu.net

1. What do the underlined words “a steal” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. an act of stealing           B. something delicious

C. something very cheap       D. an act of buying

2. London has become the second most expensive city because of ______.

A. the high cost of clothing     B. the stronger pound against the dollar

C. its expensive transportation   D. the high prices of fast food meals

3. Which city is the third most expensive on the list?

A. Tokyo.           B. Hong Kong.    C. Moscow.         D. Sydney.

More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely (休闲的) midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops, and factories are discovering the great efficiency (效率) of a short lunch hour in company lunch rooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the “typical” Frenchman gains in creature comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality.

Some say that France has been Americanized. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that “assembly-line (流水线) life” will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more leisurely (but less productive) old French style. What will happen, they ask, to the cultivation (培养) of the good things in life — to enjoy in the smell of freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy hours of conversation in a local café?

Since the late 1950’s,life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the success of this competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with great violence.

In  spite  of  the  critics,  however,  countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more benefits, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is better than the old.

1. Which of the following is NOT a feature of the new French way of life?

A. Shorter lunch hour.           B. Greater output.

C. Creature comforts.           D. Leisurely café talk.

2. The passage suggests that ______.

A. in pursuing material gain the French are suffering losses elsewhere

B. it’s now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the river

C. the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked apples

D. great changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen

3. Which of the following is TRUE about the critics?

A. Critics are greater in number than people enjoying the new way of life.

B. Student critics are greater in number than critics in other fields.

C. Student critics have, sometimes, resorted to violent means against the trend.

D. Critics are concerned only with the present and not the future.

4. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?

A. Changes in the French way of life.

B. Criticism of the new life style.

C. The Americanization of France.

D. Features of the new way of life.

In England, Christmas is the most important of all the holidays in the year. Two important things help to set this holiday apart from all others: the custom of giving gifts and the habit of spending it with the family.

In the present highly commercialized (商业化的) age, we are reminded of Christmas many weeks before the event. In the shops the special Christmas displays appear. In the shopping centers of very large towns decorations are put up in the streets. Thousands of people flock into the center of the town to see the decorations. The advertisements in all the newspapers keep reminding us that there are “Only × more shopping days to Christmas”. The Post Office vans (有盖小货车) are covered with brightly colored posters urging us to “Post Early for Christmas”, for hundreds of millions of Christmas cards and millions of parcels are sent every year. Everywhere one turns, one is made aware that Christmas, which comes “but once a year”, is coming once again.

Many people deplore (谴责) what they consider the over-commercialization of a sacred holiday, but under all the business activities, a great deal of true Christmas spirit is to be found. The custom of giving presents to one’s family and friends is a very pleasant one so long as one remembers that it is the spirit behind the gift which matters most and not the gift itself. And how good it is at Christmas to return to the family home and meet parents, grandparents and as many aunts, uncles and cousins as can be accommodated (容纳). Without twentieth and 21st century means of transport, many families would be denied the Christmas reunion.

On Christmas Eve, the traditional custom of hanging up a stocking at the foot of the bed is performed by millions of excited children. During the day the Christmas tree will have been dressed. All is now ready for the great morning, which comes round soon enough. Many of the young children stay awake until Santa Claus (or Father Christmas, as some call him) steals in to deliver the presents they have asked him for.

Christmas Day is spent quietly at home. The excitement of all the presents is hardly over before it is time for the traditional Christmas dinner.

1. In the first paragraph, the phrase “set ... apart” is closest in meaning to “______”.

A. make ... different      B. set ... aside

C. remove ... from        D. divide ... by

2. Which of the following reminds you of the true Christmas spirit?

A. Commercialization.         B. Goods on display.

C. Family reunion.              D. Colored posters.

3. We can infer from the passage that before the 20th century ______.

A. people didn’t have a happy family reunion

B. it was hard for a family to gather together at Christmas

C. people could travel freely during the holiday

D. the true spirit of Christmas couldn’t be found

4. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Christmas Decoration

B. Holidays in the West

C. Christmas in England

D. Father Christmas

Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions – mistaken ideas.

One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It’s ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid ethnocentrism, it’s necessary to study the different elements(组成部分) of culture: language, values and attitudes, and customs and manners.

Language

A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can communicate directly. Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.

Values and Attitudes

Values are people’s basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad. An attitude is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence international business. For example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.

Customs and manners

Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For example, in the United States, it is the custom to have salad (色拉) before the main course at dinner, not after. It’s not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn’t sell well because the French don’t usually drink juice with breakfast.

1. A knowledge of the local language allows international business people _____.

A. to be more open with their customers

B. to communicate without outside help

C. to express their thoughts indirectly

D. to have a better idea of their own culture

2. The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of ___.

A. manners       B. values            C. attitudes        D. customs

3. What would be the best title for the text?

A. Misconceptions in Business         B. Basic Beliefs in Business

C. International Business Culture       D. Successful International Business

Ⅳ、阅读与表达 (共5分,每小题1分)

阅读短文, 根据其内容回答问题。

Every year, 40 days before Easter, Brazil stops. It’s a time for the carnival! For four days from Saturday to Tuesday, Brazilians sing and dance in dance halls and clubs, on the streets and beaches, or anywhere else. The carnival takes place in towns and villages all over Brazil and other Catholic countries, but Rio de Janeiro is seen as the Carnival Capital of the world. Carnival is the last big event in the summer in Brazil. It may begin 40 days before Easter, but the city begins getting ready for the carnival several weeks before that.

Edinburgh Festival: The heart of Scottish culture.

The Edinburgh International Festival is a rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance in theatres in Edinburgh, over a three-week period in August.

The festival began in 1947 to try to use the arts to encourage ‘the flowering of the human spirit’. From the start, ordinary people began to put on shows of their own that weren’t part of the official Festival, and soon this programme became the Edinburgh Festival ‘Fringe’, which is a separate programme of small shows.

Korean New Year: Solnal

Korean celebrate the lunar (农历)New Year, with other East Asia countries. Solnal is a time for families, so Koreans try to return to their homes.

On New Year’s Eve people put things on their walls and doors to protect their families from bad spirits arriving with the New Year. Then On New Year’s Day, people put on traditional clothes and put food on a special table for the dead members of their family.

Then the family sits down to a traditional breakfast of ‘took-guk’ —a thick beef soup with rice cakes and green onions. Everyone must eat in order of age, and everyone becomes one year older on New Year’s Day.

The rest of the day is for playing, especially for children. Families enjoy activities such as kite-flying, see-saw(跷跷板)and dancing.

The New Year is a time for Koreans to celebrate family and tradition.
