It was Thanksgiving morning. I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet wit h heavy snow.
“Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?”
“Am I rich? Pity, no!”
I looked at my wornout slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer (碟) carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and—WHUMP! —it hit the Jag’s shiny black side door! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid, “What was that all about and who are you? That’s my new Jag, that brick you threw is gonna cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it? ”
“Please, mister, please. . . I’m sorry! I didn’t know what else to do! ” begged the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop! ” Tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister, ” he said. “He rolled of the curb (路沿) and fell out of his wheelchair and I can’t lift him up. ”Sobbing, the boy asked the businessman, “ Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? Today, people all over the world are moving out of small villages in the country to go and live in big, noisy cities. They are moving from the peaceful hills, mountains, fields, rivers and streams of the countryside to the busy world of streets, buildings, traffic and crowds. This movement from rural areas to urban areas has been going on for over two hundred years.
In many countries, the main reason people come to live in towns and cities is work. After one or two large factories have been built in or near a town, people come to find work, and soon an industrial area begins to grow. There is usually a_residential_area nearby, too. The families of these workers need schools, hospitals and shops, so many people come to live in the area to provide these services and a city grows.
In every major city in the world, there is a business district where the big companies have their main offices. In the United States, this area is usually in the city center downtown. It is here that you can see many huge skyscrapers(摩天大楼) and office blocks. The people who work here often travel a long way to work each day. Many of them live in the suburbs of the city, far away from the industrial area and the city center. Some suburbs are very pleasant, with nice houses and big gardens. There are usually parks for children to play in and large department stores where you can buy all you need.
But what is the future of the big cities? Will they continue to get bigger and bigger? Perhaps not. Some major cities have actually become smaller in the last ten years, and it is quite possible that one day we will see people moving out of the major cities and back into smaller towns and villages.

A.and live there
B.but live in the suburbs of the city
C.and live in another city
D.but live in rural areas
40.We can infer that this movement from rural to urban areas ________.
A.has been going on for more than 2,000 years
B.will surely continue in the future
C.may not continue in the future
D.has now stopped already

Moving in with a boyfriend causes women to eat more unhealthily and put on weight. But the opposite is true for men, whose longterm health benefits when they move in with a female partner.
Dieticians at Newcastle University said both partners try to please one another, and so change their dietary habits to suit their other half.
It leads men to eat more light meals, such as salads, fruit and vegetables, while women choose to make creamier, heavier dishes like curry or rich pasta sauces, which may please their partner.
Women still have the strongest longterm influence over the couple's diet and lifestyle, as they still have the traditional role of shopper and cook in most households.
The report, by Newcastle University's Human Nutrition Research Centre, reviewed the finding of a variety of research projects from the UK, North America and Australia, which looked at the eating and lifestyle habits of couples.
The research shows that women are more likely to put on weight and increase their consumption of foods high in fat and sugar when they move in with their partner.
Women also use food as a comfort when dealing with emotional stress and have been found to gain weight when a relationship ends, while the same finding has not been observed in men.
Many couples reported food as being central to their partnership, and eating together in the evening was particularly important to many.
Report author and registered dietician Dr. Amelia Lake said, “The research has shown that your partner is a strong influence on lifestyle and people who are trying to live healthier lives should take this factor into consideration.”
41.According to the passage, moving in with a girlfriend, men ________.

A. Chapter One. …you probably have an image in your mind of what the “perfect’ or “ideal” body looks like. Try not to press yourself to look that way. Each person is born with genes that control the shape of his/her body. Everyone is different. It’s important to be comfortable with the body you have.
B. Chapter Two. …You use energy for everything you do. That energy comes from the food you eat. Too much food or too little exercise causes your body to store the extra energy in fat cells. But, if you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you’ll feel healthier and stronger not to mention look great.
C. Chapter Three. … Your body runs best on foods high in carbohydrates and low in fat and sugar. Eating a healthy diet will provide your body with everything it needs to run smoothly. Your body breaks down proteins into amino acids(氨基酸), so you don’t need to take in the amino acids separately.
D. Chapter Four. …Exercise does more than just burn calories. For instance, regular exercise makes your muscles strong and flexible, and increases the amount of muscle you have. It also makes your heart stronger and lowers your blood pressure; …
E. Chapter Five. …Always warm up and stretch for 5-10 minutes before you do strength or endurance exercises. Afterwards, take 10 minutes to cool down. Your heart should beat normally when you stop. Exercising with a group may help you to exercise regularly.
F. Chapter Six. …Supplementation of a mixture of essential amino acids will increase protein synthesis While supplementing with either carbohydrate or amino acids may limit muscle damage and stimulate (激励) protein synthesis, there is increasing evidence that the combination can have an addictive effect.

They said they would take me.We chatted and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.I wrote them a thank-you note.Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in the morning. In late afternoon I found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?"
16.running 17.slipped 18.difficulty 19.was rising 20.successfully 21.A 22.who 23.where 24.She 25.to
(A)
小男孩的问话 “Lady, are you rich?” 和小女孩的话 “Your cups match your saucers”引起了作者对富裕的深刻思考, 改变了她原先对幸福的片面认识,因此用“Lady, are you rich?”
由第三段“I was busy. I wanted to say ‘no’ until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow.”
由最后一段中的“Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.”
根据倒数第三段可知女士增肥不仅是因为迎合了对方的口味,还有缓解情绪的原因,故A项错误;根据倒数第三段最后while the same finding has not been observed in men可知B项错误;D项文中没有提及。
47. C 关键词是foods…in fat与eating meat a lot。
48. B 关键词是look great与look well。
49. A 关键词是an image of what the “perfect’ or “ideal” body与write a passage about what a healthy body is。
50. D 关键词是regular exercise makes your muscles与why people have to exercise。
One possible version:
Dear Editor,
Recently, my classmates and I made a survey about the migrant schools in our city. Problems do exist.
Owing to the lack of money, most migrant schools have no modern equipment, no playground, no libraries, and even not enough teachers. However, we find that the migrant kids are just as keen on study as us. In order to improve the situation, we think our government should take measures to pour more money into migrant schools. As for us, the local students, can help to collect money or donate books to them. We do hope that the whole society can care more about migrant kids, because if everyone contributes a bit, migrant kids can surely enjoy equal education opportunity.
