Only one of the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World still survives, which is the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo. The other six Ancient Wonders of the World are the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Now a new list of seven has been chosen from 21 locations shortlisted for the worldwide vote by history lovers.

An original list of nearly 200 sites picked out by the public was narrowed to 21 by the organizers and experts, including the former director general of Unesco Professor Federico Mayor. Among the 21 locations were the Stonehenge in Britain, Acropolis in Athens, the Statue of Liberty in New York, Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall in China. The only standard for the new list was that the landmarks were built or discovered before  2000.

The vote was organized by a non-profit Swiss foundation called New 7 Wonders specializing in the protection, rebuilding and mending of historical relics. The result was announced in Lisbon, on July 7, 2007. Here is the complete list of the new seven wonders the Great Wall of China, Petra, Chichén itzá, the Statue of Christ Redeemer, the Colosseum, Machu Picchu and the Taj Mahal.

“You may wonder, Sir Percival," said Laura calmly, "if I am going to ask to be released (免除)from my promise to marry you. I am not going to ask this. I respect my father's wishes too much. ”

His face relaxed a little, but one of his feet kept beating the carpet.

“No, if we are going to withdraw.(退出)from our planned marriage, it will be because of your wish, not mine. ”

"Mine?” he said in great surprise. ”What reason could I have for withdrawing?”

"A reason that is very hard to tell you,” she answered. "There is a change in me. ”

His face went so pale that even his lips lost their color. He turned his head to one side.

“What change?" he asked, trying to appear calm.

" When the promise was made two years ago", she said, “ my love did not belong to anyone. Will you forgive me, Sir Percival, if I tell you that it now belongs to another person?"

“I wish you to understand", Laura continued, “that I will never see this person again, and that if you leave me, you only allow me to remain a single woman for the rest of my life. All I ask is that you forgive me and keep my secret.”

“I will do both those things, " he said. Then he looked at Laura, as if he was waiting to hear more.

第四节  书面表达 (满分25分)

One possible version 1

Editor,

Nowadays mobile phones are becoming more and more popular among the middle school students.I think it is unnecessary for them to have them. The reasons are as follows.

First of  all , middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. They bring their phones to the classroom and we often hear the ring in class. Some of them even waste too much time playing games and sending text messages , which is a waste of time and affects their studies. What’s more, it's easy to cause the students to vie with each other. In addition, it is reported that mobile phones can produce radiation, which does harm to their health.

In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as middle school students,we should put all our heart into our studies.

Yours truly,

Wang Lin

One possible version 2

Editor,

Nowadays mobile phones are becoming more and more popular among the middle school students. In my opinion, we can bring mobile phones to school.

As we know, the 21st century is a modern age which is full of information. A mobile phone is one of the quickest tools for us to exchange information. It’s a fashionable and useful invention, so we ought to make full use of it. Besides, if there's a sudden accident, it is more convenient for us to dial for help immediately. And what’s more, there're also some games in it. We can relax ourselves by playing them when we're tired of our studies.

In my opinion, it's not wrong to follow the fashion, but the most important thing is how to use the mobile phone in a right way.

Yours truly,

Wang Lin

W Bob hasn’t spoken to me for quite a few days. I don’t know what to do.

M Did you quarrel with him?

W I don’t know. He once invited me to the cinema but I refused. I was just very tired that day. I didn’t tell him.

(Text 6)

M So, how long have you been in the Peace Corps?

W For about a year now.

M Do you enjoy it?

W Most of the time. The work can be extremely difficult, but it has its rewards.

W For me, it’s finding a way to fit into a community that’s very different from my own. It can be frustrating!

M And what’s the most rewarding thing?

W That’s easy. The most rewarding thing about being in the Peace Corps is learning about another culture.

(Text 7)

W Hello, may I help you? We’ve got some new pens.

M Thanks a lot, but I’m looking for a notebook.

W Notebooks are located on the central shelf.

M I’ll just take this, please.

W That will be one dollar and four cents.

M Excuse me, the price tag says ninety-nine cents.

W Oh, that’s because this state has a five percent sales tax.

M You mean I have to pay extra money?

W That’s right. I don’t like it, either, but it’s the law …

M Here’s the money. In Korea, we only pay as much as the price tag says.

W Really? That must be nice.

(Text 8)

W Excuse me, sir? We have a small problem here and I wonder if you might be able to help me.[来源:

M What’s the problem probably?

W Well, the flight is very full this morning, so there are no spare seats anywhere. I have three small children. Unfortunately they’re sitting separately, and obviously they would prefer to sit together.

M Yes… and you want me to move?

W Would that be all possible?

M Well, I’m very comfortable here actually. I did as k for this seat.

W Well, we can move you to another comfortable seat if you prefer. We would very much appreciate it if you could help us.

M Well, I don’t see why I should. I mean I did ask for this seat. Why don’t you ask someone else?

(Text 9)

W Gerry, come and look at the information pack for our trip to London.

M There are so many things to do, Penny. I don’t know where to start.

W Well, why don’t we start with the kids? I don’t think Sally would like the zoo. She always feels sorry for the animals, but she’s been asking about the London Eye for weeks, so we have to go there.

M You’re right. What about Billy? He loves boats, so it’s either the Thames or the zoo.

W Definitely the Thames for Billy. What about an opera at Covent Gardens for your parents?

M That would be great. So you don’t want to go shopping in Oxford Street then?

W Which page is that on? Wow! This looks fantastic. There are so many great shops in Oxford Street. Will you come with me?

M I’ll come if you really want me to, dear.

(Text 10)

M Our home here is fairly large. We have four bedrooms, an office, two bathrooms, a front room and a dining room. We do a lot of things around the house. We garden quite a bit, walk in our garden, and we play basketball on the basketball court we’ve got out the back. Usually Saturday afternoon we have a barbecue and that’s our meal because during the summer it gets pretty hot here and sometimes you just want to be outside rather than be inside. In California you really have two seasons from our entertainment point of view — spring, summer and f all are all very much the same type of activities and then winter is very different on the activities that we do on the weekend. Summertime activities are usually involved around the children’s sports. My youngest son often plays baseball in summer.
