Co-operation means working together for the benefit of all. Without co-operation, modern society could not exist. Co-operation among the farmers in the dry areas of certain parts of Australia and Africa is very important. The fields have been irrigated(灌溉) in these areas. Crops cannot be grown without water. For this purpose, canals(水渠) and reservoirs(水库) have been built. The canals have been cut through the fields of not only one farmer. Those who live higher up the valley than the others have permitted canals to be built through their land in order to carry water to the fields of farmers lower down. When there is a long period without rain, all share the water. Instead of taking all the water for themselves, the farmers in the higher land leave enough water for their neighbours down the valley. Farming in the dry areas has been made possible by such co-operation. By co-operation farmers have learned to make even the desert produce crops.

60. Co-operation means ______.

A. working for others        B. working for oneself

C. working together for the interests of all

D. working together for the benefit of the whole world

Isn’t it astonishing(令人惊讶的) how much time we talk about food? “Have you ever eaten…?” “What did you have for lunch?” and so on. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you will find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal and what other people eat is strange. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day.

The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don’t like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish

So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.

64. What is the main part of every meal in the Middle East?

A. Rice    B. Bread    C. Meat    D. Tomato

65. Why does Japanese not like sheep meat? Because it ______.

A. is expensive B. is cheap       C. is delicious    D. smells

66. The meaning of “raw” is ______.

A. not cooked    B. nicely cooked    C. big          D. young

67. According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. In some parts of Asia people like rice.

B. Eating is a topic that people don’t like to talk about.

C. The habit of eating is easy to change.

D. French people like sheep meat very much.

D

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or order. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways---education, medicine and business. Quietly, the graying(人口老化) of America has made us a very different society---one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior(行为,表现) is suitable at various ages.

A person’s age no longer tells you anything about his/her position, marriage or health. There is no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn’t as strong as it used to be. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.

Many people say, “I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age.” No one says “Act your age” any more. We’ve stop looking with surprise at older people, who act in youthful ways.

68. It can be learned from the text that the aging of the population in America ______.

A. has changed people’s social position

B. has changed people’s understanding of age

C. has made people feel younger

D. has made people feel older

69. The underlined word “one” in paragraph 1 refers to ______.

A. a society       B. America       C. a place       D. population

70. “Act your age” means people should ______.

A. show respect for their parents young or old

B. do the right thing at the right age

C. be active when they are old

D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

71. If a 25-year-old man becomes general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text

would most probably consider it ______.

A. unbelievable(不可相信的)     B. wonderful

C. normal         D. unreasonable(不合理的)
